Curious about clay or wanting a fresh start? This beginners hand building class is perfect for adults (18+). Tutors Josie and Nikki guide you through simple, foundational techniques with clear demonstrations and hands-on practice.

Course Overview

Term 1 is split into two 3-week blocks. Join one or both. $120 per block or $240 for both.

Block 1 – Pinching (with Josie)

Learn the basic pinching technique and create small bowls and a lemon squeezer.

Dates: 10 & 17 Feb (making), 24 Feb (glazing). Collect work + pub meetup: 3 Mar.
Cost: $120 (all materials, firings, and glazes included).

Block 2 – Soft Slabbing (with Nikki)

Explore soft slabbing to make a plate/platter and matching cup or mug.

Dates: 10 & 17 Mar (making), 24 Mar (glazing). Collect work + pub meetup: 31 Mar.
Cost: $120 (all materials, firings, and glazes included).

General info

Time: 6–8pm (you may leave early if finished)

Venue: Climate Action Campus, 180 Avonside Drive, Christchurch

Bring: Apron (optional) and a closed drink bottle.

The class continues through the year with more skills in coiling, slabbing, and sculpting. You can join any term, and tutors will help you catch up.

Step into our serene, light-filled pottery room located within the Climate Action Campus

Tools & materials provided

Your course fee includes tutor guidance and use of a range of pottery tools See above description for other items included (clay, glazes and firings). Please bring a cloth apron and a closed drink bottle to keep hydrated during the class.

Take home your creation

At the end of the course we take a couple of weeks to fire all of your work carefully in our kiln. After the kiln goddess has done her work we then invite you to collect your unique pottery creations and celebrate!
