About Nikki Wallace-Bell

Maker

Welcome to Nikki Wallace-Bell Ceramics! Based in my workshop in Sumner, Canterbury, New Zealand, I create beautiful, ceramic table and homewares. Each piece is a one off original. I am inspired by the natural land and seascapes that surround me. I love to observe the surfaces, forms and colours I encounter while walking in the Port Hills and along Sumner Beach. My wares are uncomplicated and glazes are developed to increase a moment of connection with experiences and memories of natural phenomena.

In use, I hope my tableware will bring pleasure both visual and practical. The purchase of one of my pieces of pottery may become the prelude to building a collection. Thoughts like ‘It’s just a mug, something to drink my tea from’ before long may lead you wanting to discover more. I want you to gain pleasure from my pieces, not only to enhance your dining experience, but enhance your life.

Slight variations in size and glaze colour between pieces, can be expected.

Tutor

When I focus on just clay I forget about everything else. I’m distracted from my problems. It returns me to my authentic self. Who I want to be, fully present in the process. With a degree in ceramics and a background in teaching art I want to share the ‘magic’ of clay. Muddy, messy and value-less, there is no right or wrong. Whatever you produce helps increase a feeling of self worth. With this in mind I founded ‘Art At Sumner Hub’, teaching pottery to adults and general art to children after school from the Sumner Hub, Old Police Station, 57 Nayland Street Sumner. Come and join either a series of beginners evening classes or dip your toes in at one of my ‘Sunday Morning Workshops’. Both are very social and relaxed. I take time to share my skills and love it when you gain confidence and find your groove!

Now, I am excited to introduce my latest offering, Social Pottery. Join a volunteer in the Art At Sumner Hub pottery rooms and practise your skills. Make use of local facilities and engage with others who love to pot too!
